Northampton grew up as an industrious and prosperous city during the industrial revolution.
Much of its prosperity was based on the shoe manufacturing trade, and many firms are still locally based. Its history however goes back much further.
As The 1st Earl of Northampton; Simon de Senlis; built his castle here after the Norman conquest. This became very popular with the kings of the time and was the site of several historic councils. It was also the place that St Thomas Beckett was bought for trial in 1164.
A decisive battle in the war of the roses was fought at Delapre in 1460. The Civil War bought the castle to an untimely demise after Northampton sided with parliament, and one of Charles IIs first acts was to raze the castle and its walls.
